House rattle a little more than usual yesterday? That wasn’t an earthquake — the Blue Angels arrived in town, signaling the pending arrival of the big Seafair Weekend Festival.
This is the first time in two years that the Seafair has graced South Seattle, so let’s take a quick tour of what to expect during the festivities. |

✈️ Festival highlights Boeing Air Show
The Navy’s Blue Angels are definitely the most talked about demonstration, but the show also includes performances by the Air Force, the US Army’s Golden Knights, US Coast Guard, aerobatic teams + a select number of Boeing planes. Demonstrations happen all three days, 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. HomeStreet Bank Cup
These hydroplane races are fast + furious — the vehicles all have the capabilities to travel 220 mph on the water. The first race begins Fri., Aug. 5 at 9:15 a.m. with the final scheduled for 4:25 p.m. on Sun., Aug. 7.
Seafair Log Boom
Each day of the fair, tons of boats link together to create one giant party — all tuned into Log Boom Radio, or Mercer Island High School’s 88.9 FM radio station. Registration is still open, with prices starting at $625 per boat under 23’ long. Boats begin lining up Fri., Aug. 5 at 6 a.m. 🚌 Getting there Since parking can often be a nightmare, public transit will likely be your best friend.
Pro Tip: You can also download the Transit app to plan your trips. The app uses real-time info, shows where your bus is on the map, and notifies you when it's time to pull the all-intimidating bus cord. |

Growing up with a grandmother who moved here from Finland, I was quickly introduced into all things Finland. Every time a Nokia commercial came on TV or if there was a new Finnish hockey player that joined our local team, it was a must for one of us to point out that they were in fact Finnish.
This has led to two habits — an ongoing inventory of everything that originated in Finland (including an ability to call out Finnish last names with 100% accuracy) and the compulsion to point them out to whomever I’m with whether they care or not. |
So now I share with you a short list of things that are Finnish here in Seattle, because I must. -
Pirkko. | An essential shop where Finns can pick up Marimekko designs, Moomin coffee mugs, and Fazer bars.
-
Joonas Donskoi | A Seattle Kraken right-winger from Raahe + the only Finn on the team. Tsk tsk.
The Finlandia Foundation: Seattle Chapter | While we Finns are shy, we do like being around other Finns — as long as no one tries to make too much small talk. Me | I am very Finnish. In fact, I am named after my great-great grandmother who herded reindeer in Kemijärvi above the Arctic Circle.

Editor's pick: This is normally where I would continue to go on about other things that are Finnish had I not written the piece above in first person, so I will spare you the fate often awarded to my partner.
Instead, I'll tell you that I just tried the original Carmelo's Tacos in Capitol Hill for the first time and enjoyed it thoroughly. In fact, here's a cute date idea for you — grab some tacos from the little window on Summit Avenue (seven tacos and rice + beans cost only $30), grab a drink from the shop next door, and take everything over to Volunteer Park for a lovely evening picnic.
